This time last year we’d just returned from a week in Portland for the Craft Brewers Conference, it was the first time myself and designer Rich had visited the city and it instantly jumped to the top the list of favourite US cities we’d visited.
Great beer, great food and an outdoor lifestyle including lots of bicycles give the city a very European feel which we loved. One of the most memorable breweries we visited while out there was Gigantic Brewing, located in the Southeast of Portland, brewer/owners Ben Love and Van Havig are veterans of the Oregon brewing community. They make fantastically flavourful interpretations of classic styles, with kick-ass branding to match.
We loved the beers (particularly Pipe Wrench their Gin Barrel IPA) and felt a real affinity to what they were doing. As is often the case in the amazing world of beer, it turns out Ben and Van are great people too. After more fun times at Copenhagen Beer Festival last year, plans were hatched to work together on a beer or two.
Our lead brewer Nick headed over to Portland to brew with Ben and Van last December, the beer brewed was a 7.7% kettle soured beer to be bourbon barrel aged with the intention of mimicking a whisky sour.
The good news is the beer is now ready and by all accounts tasting amazing! Even better news, Ben Love is coming over to launch the beer ‘Holy Oak’ at our taproom on Thursday 26th May and has also sent another SEVEN of their beers to be on the bar at the same time.
Our collaboration will be available on draught for the FIRST TIME anywhere in the UK, we will also have 650ml bottles to take away. If that’s not enough, ‘What’s your Beef’ will be down slinging their delicious burgers (including a special ‘Holy Oak flavoured burger).
Come down and drink the beers and talk to Ben, it’ll be a HUGE night we promise…
